Homeschool Schedule

You need to have a schedule in your homeschool!

It doesn’t matter how “go with the flow” you are, having a homeschool schedule is essential for homeschooling working parents. This will enable you to cover all the necessary content while having fun!
Now wait a minute, before you start formulating all the reasons why a schedule is not necessary, I need you to hear me out on this one!

First, I want you to take the idea that you have of a “typical” schedule and toss it out the window! Yes, you
read that right! You might be thinking but your title is telling me that I need a schedule in my homeschool and now you’re asking me to throw that out?

I sure am! Now, Iโ€™m not talking about a minute by minute, hour by hour schedule here. In your homeschool you can choose to run a tight ship or be as relax as you want. However, In order for you to get things done and accomplish everything that you want to accomplish, you need to have some sort of a structure. This is especially important if you are a working homeschooling parent or you are collaborating with others to homeschool your children. Whether it be your spouse or relatives. Everyone needs to be on the same page and know who is doing what! If not, your time is just going to fly by and before you know it, you are going to find yourself saying โ€œthere just isnโ€™t enough timeโ€, “this is impossible” “I’m so burned out”. In this post I will share some questions to consider when you are crafting your homeschool schedule.

Why use a schedule in homeschool

“there is just not enough time”

Without structure, your time is just going to fly by and before you know it you are going to find yourself saying โ€œthere just isnโ€™t enough timeโ€.

There are a variety of ways that you can implement a schedule your homeschool. This is going to vary greatly based on your familyโ€™s individual needs and situations.

Take my family for example. You might already know that both my husband Sean and I work full time
jobs and neither one of us works from home! I know itโ€™s mind blowing lol. So when Sean and I made the
choice to homeschool we had to carefully look at our work schedule and see how were we going to make this happen.

When making a schedule you must have the mindset that it’s subject to changes. Now our schedule has definitely changed greatly from our first year because we adjusted it as needed to best fit our familyโ€™s needs.

Here is a glimpse of our homeschooling schedule:

Monday through Friday:

  • 9am-12pm Core Subjects including Bible with Dad (both kids)
  • After dinner-phonics review, reading, and writing with Mom (Kindergartener & 5th grader )
  • Bedtime- Book report book reading with mom (5th Grader) Bedtime story with Mom (Kindergartener)
  • Music- Everyday, time varies

Weekends & Extended Holiday Breaks:

  • Penmanship, Art, & Creative Writing with mom (both kids) & Grading/record keeping
  • Library, community events
  • Field Trips

Summers

  • Devotions
  • Experiential learning trips
  • Pennmanship
  • Community events
  • Book Clubs/Novel Units
  • Penmanship

Yes, it might look a bit scattered on paper, but in application itโ€™s an amazing and perfect schedule for our family! Something that we realized in our first year of homeschooling is that homeschooling is a lifestyle! Learning can look different and happen in different places and time. So our schedule was made to flow with our families lifestyle.

Things to consider when crafting your homeschooling schedule as a working parent

  1. What is your work schedule?
  2. What times are available to homeschool your children? (think outside the box, break out of the 7am-3pm and Monday-Friday mentality!)
  3. Who will be homeschooling?
  4. Which tasks & subjects will each parent/guardian be responsible for? (Think of your strengths and weaknesses. You can’t get offended about this! Put all your feeling to the side and objectively look at this) Watch this YT Video on how we make it work with our curriculum in our home.
  5. What content do you want to cover? (make sure to check your states homeschool laws)
  6. Will you use a curriculum? (read here why you should use a curriculum as a working parent)
  7. Where will homeschooling occur?
