The Start of My Joyful Journey to Running My First 5K
Hi, I’m Yessi—wife, mom, educator, YouTuber, blogger, and someone who loves the Lord with all my heart. I’ve been blessed with such a joyful life, and I love sharing pieces of that joy with you. Whether it’s our homeschooling adventures or delicious Puerto Rican recipes, I enjoy writing about what I know and love. But today, I’m stepping into new territory…
Fitness.
Yep, you read that right. I’m setting out to achieve something I’ve never done before: run my first ever 5K. 🤩 If you’re looking for a beginner 5K training plan for moms, you’re in the right place because that’s exactly the journey I’m on.

Why a 5K?
To be honest, fitness isn’t an area where I feel confident. I used to go to the gym before I had kids (which feels like a lifetime ago), and back then, I could jog on the treadmill for 12-13 minutes and be ok. Fast forward to today, and I can barely make it to the end of the driveway without running out of breath!
That reality hits me hard, especially when my daughter wants to play tag, and I struggle to keep up. It has made me realize: I want to be healthier. Not just for me, but for my family. I want to take care of this temple of the Holy Spirit, to honor the body God has given me. And let’s be real—I also want to outrun my kids in a friendly game of tag without gasping for air!
Breaking Generational Cycles
Health is personal for me because I come from a family with a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol issues. My mom, her sisters, my grandmother—they’ve all dealt with these challenges. I don’t want to inherit these generational health issues if I can help it. I want to be proactive and create a lifestyle that supports a healthy heart, strong body, and vibrant life.
The Plan (Because I Love a Good Plan!)
I firmly believe that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. So, here’s my game plan—which could also serve as a simple beginner 5K training plan for moms who are starting from scratch like me:
- Lose 10 Pounds: Starting at 185.4 lbs, my first goal is to shed 10 pounds. Not just for the number on the scale, but to build endurance and create healthy habits.
- Workout Routine: I’m kicking things off with Grow with Jo workout videos. Her energy is contagious, and I love how encouraging she is—perfect for someone like me who’s easing back into fitness.
- Intermittent Fasting: I’ll be implementing intermittent fasting Monday through Friday, which fits well with my work and homeschooling schedule.
- Couch to 5K Program: Once the weather warms up (because, this has been the snowiest winter ever!), I’ll transition to outdoor runs using the Couch to 5K program. I think this structured approach fits perfectly within a beginner 5K training plan for moms who need guidance and gradual progress. ( I think I might tweak it up a little, but we’ll see when the time comes 🤗)
