homeschool organization

Let me tell you, homeschooling organization is the key to success! Especially if you are a working parent or are co-homeschooling like my husband and I do! We are already short in time and energy. We just don’t have the luxury to spend any time trying to figure out what we need to do, where is the book for a lesson, what happened to the lesson DVDs, or where that one paper went! I can go on with all the things that can go missing when we need it! 😂 But with an organization system in our home the chances of one of these things happening are reduced by 90%.

I want you to know that homeschooling organization is a key component to having efficiency and establishing routines in your homeschool setting. I Speak from first hand experience.

So now that you are officially getting ready to homeschool, you have an idea of what you want your homeschool approach to be and you might have a curriculum in mind, you are now probably wondering: “How in the world am I going to keep it all together?

Here are some questions to consider when setting up your homeschooling organizational system.

Homeschooling Organization Q & A

  1. Do you need a homeschool room? NO! You can homeschool ANYWHERE! The living room, dinning room, bedroom, kitchen, outside, or even in the car. Any place that is practical and conducive to learning for your family will work.
  2. Do you need to have a desk for every child? NO! There are so many alternatives to a desk. You don’t “have to” have a desk for learning to happen. Even classrooms in brick and mortar schools nowadays have “flexible seating” options as alternatives to traditional desks and chairs. Just like I mentioned in the answer above, homeschooling can take place ANYWHERE. The couch, coffee table, dining room table, on the floor, on the grass outside, a picnic table, or bean bag chair! You name it!
  3. Do you need to buy every shelf, caddy or cabinet that you see other people using on Pinterest or Instagram? NO! I’ll be very frank and tell you our learning space is far from Pinteresty! Don’t get me wrong, I love some of the ideas out there! However, they are just not practical for every family. Everybody doesn’t have the time, space or money to make those perfectly accented shelves. (I sure don’t)
  4. Do you need to buy massive amounts of books? Absolutely not! Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about books and kids having access to quality literature! My kids each have a small shelf in their bedrooms of books they enjoy to read repeatedly. For the most part, once we read a book, if it’s not a picture book, the likelihood of it being read again is very low! We have access to several local libraries that have so many amazing books for us to borrow, read and return! Such a beautiful thing! So there’s no need for shelves upon shelves to store a bunch of books that will only be read once.
  5. Do you need to have all the craft materials under the sun? Umm, no! Yes the idea of a craft closet sounds so grand! I know that you might have saved a bunch of Pins with all the crafts that you want to do. (I sure have) But lets be real, you aren’t going to need a closet full of craft supplies to accomplish them. I only keep the basic art supplies at hand. If I need any specialty craft supply, I get it with my grocery order the week before I’m going to be using it. (so no need to find storage for extra supplies! Hey, that’s one less thing to manage 😁 )

You do not need to go out and spend a fortune to create a learning space or organizational system in your homeschool. HOWEVER, you do need to have an organization plan or system in place.

How to come up with a homeschool organization system?

Think of what you already have and how you can use these things in your home to serve different purposes.

When we decide to make our home our learning space it can easily become chaos! Books, manipulatives, and supplies will go everywhere without an organization system in place!

One of the things that I’ve learned from being a classroom teacher for 15 years is that, there needs to be systems and procedures in place to prevent chaos! Everything needs to have a home to return to. If not, it will just end up in the kitchen, on the dinner table, on the floor, in someone’s room, left in the car, everywhere except the place where you need it to be at!

Then of course, when you need to use the materials you waste time figuring out where did they go or who had it last. As a result, you along with everyone else around you end up very frustrated!

Since we don’t have any spare rooms in our home, our children don’t always homeschool in our house, and my husband and I are both working homeschooling parents, the lack of an organizational system is NOT an option! We don’t have the time or space to not have a system.

There are multiple hands that go into our homeschooling resources so we must have a concrete system in place.
