As a year ends a new one begins I love reflecting on the goals that were met that year and create new resolutions (goals) for the new year. Now, you know that old saying, “Resolutions are made to be broken”? Many years ago, that used to be me, I would set the same exact resolutions and nothing ever came from it. Well, if that’s your mentality, let’s flip the script and call them goals instead—because goals are made to be met! This year, lets focusing on setting New Year’s resolutions (goals) that are both realistic and attainable. And guess what? You can too!

As a working homeschool mom, life can feel like a juggling act with flaming swords, but that doesn’t mean we can’t strive to grow, improve, and make the most of the new year. I like to set a physical, spiritual, and business goal. In this post, I’m sharing my resolutions and how I’ve broken them down into manageable steps. Hopefully, it’ll inspire you to set your own goals with confidence and grace.

Tips for Setting Your Own New Year’s Resolutions

  1. Be realistic: Don’t set 20 goals; focus on 3-5 that truly matter to you.
  2. Make them specific: Vague goals like “get healthy” or “spend more time with family” are hard to measure. Define exactly what you want to achieve.
  3. Break it down: Divide big goals into smaller, actionable steps.
  4. Track progress: Use a journal, app, or calendar to keep yourself accountable.
  5. Be flexible: Life happens, and it’s okay to adjust your goals as needed.
  6. Celebrate wins: No matter how small, take time to acknowledge your progress.

Setting My New Year’s Resolutions (goals) for 2025

  1. Run a 5K
  2. Declutter the house (this is a continuous goal)
  3. Monetize my blog
  4. Establish regular family devotions

Now, let’s talk about how I’m planning to achieve these goals, step by step. I feel that sharing them here with you is definitely creating some accountability 🤪 I’ll also sprinkle in some tips to help you set and crush your own resolutions!

Plan of Action

1. Run a 5K

This has been on my list for a while, and this year, I’m making it happen. Here’s my strategy:

  • Start small: After I get home from work, I’ll carve out 15 minutes for a walk/run combo and then continue to gradually increase the time. Slow and steady wins the race, right?
  • Track progress: I’ll use a running app to monitor my distance and pace.
  • Celebrate milestones: Once I hit running a mile without stopping, you bet I’ll reward myself with a new pair of running shoes.

Tip for you: Set fitness goals that align with your lifestyle. If a 5K feels too big, aim for 10-minute walks three times a week and build from there.

2. Declutter the House

Clutter is a sneaky beast, and it’s time to tackle it with the whole family. I don’t know about you, but by the time the end of the year rolls, the house is filled with all sorts of things that have been bought or given to us. Therefore, this is an annual goal of mine. The first massive declutter I did of our home was several years ago and I actually share it on my YouTube channel. Now I make a goal of trying to maintain it.

  • Set a timer: On non-church nights, we’ll spend 15 minutes as a family decluttering one area of the house. Small efforts add up!
  • Keep it simple: Each family member gets a specific task (e.g., sorting toys, folding laundry).
  • Donate and toss: Anything we haven’t used in over a year is heading to the donation bin or trash.

Tip for you: Don’t aim to declutter the whole house in one weekend. You’ll get burnt out quickly! Focus on one drawer, one shelf, or one corner at a time.

3. Grow My Blog

It’s time to turn my passion into a side hustle.

  • Consistent content: I’ll publish a blog post weekly. Consistency is key for building an audience.
  • Learn the ropes: I’ll dedicate 1/2 hour a week to continue my learning about building a successful blog.

Tip for you: If you have a goal like starting a side hustle, break it into small, actionable steps. Focus on building habits that lead to long-term success.

4. Establish Regular Family Devotions

I’ve always want to incorporate more spiritual connection into our family time. The Bible says “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭6‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭This is something that my husband and I take to heart and love to incorporate into all aspects of our lives.

We have been doing great with bible time during our homeschool day and during the summer I hold daily devotions with our kids. However, I want them to continue working on building their own intimate relationship and as a whole family discuss certain topics. I have done some research and have found some devotion materials by Not Consumed that come with studies that are broken down by age level, yet discuss the same topic. I feel that it will be the perfect tool for our family. I’m really excited about this!

  • Weekend breakfast devotions: We’ll begin with Saturday and Sunday breakfasts, reading a short devotional and discussing it as a family.
  • Flexible mornings: On mornings when I’m off work, we’ll do the same.
  • Keep it short: 10-15 minutes to start, ensuring it’s meaningful but not overwhelming.

Tip for you: Start small with any new family habit. Consistency matters more than length or complexity.

You’ve Got This!

Setting resolutions doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Think of it as a chance to dream, plan, and grow one step at a time. If you’re a busy mom like me, remember that progress is better than perfection. Let’s cheer each other on and make 2025 a year of meaningful change.

What are your resolutions this year? Share them in the comments, I’d love to hear your plans and cheer you on!
