What Makes Puerto Rican Oatmeal Different?

In Puerto Rican homes, oatmeal—or avena—is often made a little richer and creamier than your typical water-and-oats recipe. We simmer the oats in milk, sweeten them just right with brown sugar, and add warm spices like cinnamon and a touch of vanilla for that comforting, familiar flavor.

It’s cozy, filling, and perfect for starting your day with something homemade and delicious.

Ingredients for the Perfect Puerto Rican Oatmeal

Here’s what you’ll need to make a comforting pot of Puerto Rican-style oatmeal:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 2 cups milk (I use regular milk, but almond or oat milk work too!)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus more for dusting)

How to Make Puerto Rican Oatmeal

Step 1: Warm the Milk Base
In a small saucepan over medium heat, add your 2 cups of milk1 tablespoon of butter, and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Stir to combine.

Add a pinch of salt (about 1/4 teaspoon), a splash of vanilla extract, and a light dusting of ground cinnamon.

Let everything warm up until the milk starts to bubble slightly—just little bubbles around the edges.

Step 2: Add the Oats
Once the milk is nice and hot, reduce the heat to low and stir in 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats.

Cook the oatmeal for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently.

Step 3: Adjust the Texture
Now here’s where you make it your own!
Some folks love thick oatmeal, others like it a little runnier. I personally like mine on the thinner side, so I cook it just until the oats are tender and the mixture has thickened slightly, but not too much.

You can always add a splash more milk if it gets too thick for your liking!

Serving Suggestions

Once your oatmeal reaches that perfect consistency, go ahead and serve it up in a cozy bowl.

I like to finish mine off with a little more cinnamon sprinkled on top, but you can totally make it your own!

Here are a few topping ideas:

  • Fresh fruit (banana slices, berries, mango)
  • Dried fruit (raisins, chopped dates)
  • Nuts (almonds, pecans, walnuts)

Or just keep it classic and simple—Puerto Rican style.

Now it’s your turn to make some Avena

There you have it—the perfect Puerto Rican oatmeal recipe, just the way I’ve always loved it. It’s quick, easy, and full of comforting flavors.

Give it a try and let me know how you like it!
And if you grew up eating oatmeal this way too, I’d love to hear your twist on it.
