As we wrap up the first quarter of our third year homeschooling with Abeka, I want to share why we continue to choose the Abeka Homeschool curriculum and why it’s been such a perfect fit for our family. I hope that this helps answer some of the questions that you might have about using this curriculum as a full-time working homeschooling family and also help you decide if it’s the right fit for you.

First, I want to say that every family is different. You don’t have to purchase a full curriculum to homeschool effectively. You can mix and match resources or even create your own! But for our family, Abeka checked all the boxes we were looking for, and it’s been a blessing in our homeschooling adventure. Here’s why!

Abeka homeschool curriculum

1. A Strong Christian Worldview

One of the biggest reasons we chose Abeka is because it weaves our Christian faith into every subject. From Bible lessons to history and science, the curriculum is grounded in a Christian worldview, which aligns with our values and faith. It’s important to us that our kids grow not only academically but spiritually, and Abeka helps foster that growth beautifully. Our children have learned so much from the Bible lessons, and we love how seamlessly faith is integrated into the curriculum’s daily studies.

2. Abeka’s Pre-Planned Lessons Make Life Easier

As a full-time working family, we needed a curriculum that didn’t require me to spend hours lesson planning every week. The Abeka curriculum has everything pre-planned, which is a total game-changer. My husband and I love that we can just open the book or turn on the video lessons, and everything is ready to go. This makes homeschooling manageable for us, even with our busy schedules.

Before homeschooling, I was really hesitant because, as a teacher, I know how time-consuming it is to plan high-quality lessons. But Abeka takes care of that for us, and it’s such a relief! It has allowed us to homeschool without the stress of creating every lesson from scratch, and I know the kids are getting a solid education.

3. Engaging Video Lessons

Another feature that sold us on Abeka’s homeschool curriculum was the video lessons. Before committing, we tested Abeka by signing up for their free 25-hour trial, and our kids loved it! My daughter, who used to struggle with counting, was engaged and learning on the very first lesson we sampled. My son also enjoyed the lessons, which was a big deal because he didn’t want the experience to feel like remote learning during COVID.

The video lessons are a fantastic tool, and while we sometimes take over certain components ourselves (like reading or specific math lessons), the videos have been a great help, especially for subjects where we might need extra support.

4. Traditional Math (No Common Core)

This was a major point for my husband. He’s not a fan of Common Core math and insisted that whatever curriculum we used needed to stick to traditional math methods. Abeka uses traditional math, which makes it much easier for us to help our kids with their school work since we are very familiar with it. This curriculum fits us perfectly, and my husband and I both felt more confident in guiding our children through their lessons.

5. High-Quality, Rigorous Education

Abeka has blown us away with how much our kids have learned. The curriculum is rigorous, and it introduces concepts early, revisiting them as the kids move up in grade levels (a spiral learning approach). For example, my son was covering topics in fourth and fifth grade that I remember teaching in middle school!

The quality of the materials and lessons is top-notch. One thing that I absolutely love is that Abeka gives our kids a well-rounded education, and it’s amazing to see how much knowledge our kiddos are soaking up.

6. Strong Phonics Program

One of my biggest concerns when we started homeschooling was teaching my kids the basics, especially phonics and reading. But Abeka’s phonics program made it easy to teach my daughter to read. When my daughter was in Abeka’s K5 she was already reading beyond where my son was at that age when he attended traditional school. Seeing my daughter’s progress has been so rewarding, and it has reaffirmed that we made the right choice with homeschooling her with this curriculum.

7. Balanced Approach to All Subjects

Another thing I love about Abeka’s homeschool curriculum is that all subjects are treated as equally important. Whether it’s language arts, math, science, social studies, or Bible, each subject gets the attention it deserves. This well-rounded approach ensures our kids aren’t just learning for a standardized test but are truly gaining a deep understanding of each subject area.

Do I recommend it?

Abeka homeschool has truly been a blessing for our family. It has made homeschooling not only possible but enjoyable. Its faith-based foundation, pre-planned lessons, engaging video content, and rigorous academics have been the perfect fit for our full-time working homeschool family. While it may not work for everyone, it has met our needs beautifully, and we plan to continue using it in the years to come and also recommend it to others.

I’d love to hear from you! What curriculum do you use or have you used in the past? Do you mix and match or stick to one program? Share your experiences in the comments. I’m always interested in learning what works for other homeschooling families!
