As a working parent, starting the homeschooling year can feel like juggling two full-time jobs. Although you know that homeschooling is the best choice for your family, the demands of your job combined with the responsibility of educating your children can feel a bit overwhelming. I speak from first and experience!
It’s very important that as homeschooling while working parents we start the year with the right approach and a mindset rooted in our faith. This can set a positive tone that lasts throughout the entire school year.
Here are some practical tips to help you begin this homeschooling year on the right foot and maintain that positivity.

7 Tips for Homeschooling While Working Parents

1. Begin with Prayer and Devotional Time
Starting each day with prayer and a devotional sets a spiritual foundation for the day ahead. Think of it as your morning coffee for the soul!ย It helps align your heart and mind with Godโs will, and bring guidance. It’s amazing what just 15 minutes of quiet time with the Lord will do!
Matthew 6:33 reminds us,ย โBut seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.โ So before you dive into math problems and lesson plans, center yourself in Godโs presence.ย Dedicate time each morning to read the Bible, pray, and reflect on Godโs word. This will not only strengthen your relationship with God but also set a positive and peaceful tone for the day.
2. Set Realistic Expectations
It’s very easy to create expectations that are very far fetched… I’m guilty of doing this ๐คช Before diving into lesson plans and schedules, take a moment to set realistic expectations for yourself and your kids. Understand that not every day will go as planned, and thatโs okay. Lean on Godโs strength, knowing that He will guide you through the challenges. Remember that you are the BEST teacher your child has. Embrace the idea that homeschooling is a journey, not a race, and give yourself grace when things don’t go perfectly. Everyday will be a new opportunity.
3. Establish a Consistent Routine
Creating a routine is essential for both you and your kids. It helps establish boundaries between work and school time, making it easier to switch roles. A consistent routine helps children know what to expect, which can reduce anxiety and create a more positive learning environment. I can attest to the importance of having consistent routines here at home and as a teacher at school. 4. Incorporate Joyful Learning
Make learning fun by incorporating activities that your children enjoy. Whether itโs through hands-on experiments, educational games, celebrating special days, or creative projects, find ways to make the lessons engaging. This not only helps your children stay interested but also reinforces a positive connections with learning. Remember, the goal is not just to cover material but to inspire a love of learning.

5. Prioritize Connection Over Perfection
Homeschooling offers a beautiful opportunity to bond with your children. So we have to prioritize that connection over perfection. I know it’s hard! Especially when you have spent so much time planning the perfect day, but remember, everyday is an opportunity for a new beginning. Take time to listen to your children, understand their challenges, and celebrate their successes.ย Building a strong relationship creates trust and support, which is crucial for maintaining a positive tone throughout the year.
6. Create a Dedicated Learning Space

Having a dedicated learning space can help your child transition into “school mode” each day.ย This doesnโt have to be a separate room. A specific corner of a room can work just as well. Equip this space with all the necessary supplies and minimize distractions. A well-organized space helps with focus and a positive attitude towards learning. In my home, things arenโt always super neat. I have young kids and they tend to spread their toys and belongings everywhere. Especially with my 6 year old future artist! The whole house is her canvas! ๐ However, thereโs one area that I make sure never gets out of control, and thatโs our homeschooling space.
7. Balance Work and Homeschooling with Time Management
Effective time management is essential for working parents. Use tools like planners, digital calendars, or apps to organize your day. I love using my Happy Planner! I’ve been using one since 2020 and I absolutely love the dashboard format and their beautiful designs. (I typically wait until the 18 month ones go on sale at Michael’s to get one around $10 ๐ค)
Set aside specific times for work, homeschooling, and self-care. Share tasks when possible and donโt be afraid to ask for help from your partner, family members, or even older children. Finding a balance that works for your family will help prevent burnout and maintain positivity.
